About John

You Are The Guitar is run by guitarist, guitar tutor and former journalist John Gregory.

John prides himself on being able to communicate successfully with people of all ages from all different sectors of society.

He has been passionate about music his whole life. By the time he was in his mid-teens he was writing his own music column for his local newspaper in Greater Manchester, England.

John soon became a senior news reporter but always kept his interest in music journalism. With a nearly 20-year career in journalism, John’s roles included time as a chief reporter and an arts and entertainment editor.

At the age of 21 he began playing the guitar and this transformed his life. He has now been playing for nearly 20 years and is a full-time guitar tutor. A lover of all guitar styles, he developed a deep love of country and Chicago blues and for the past eight years has played in a blues duo, Blue John and Papa Cass.

The duo has opened shows for big names in blues and roots music such as The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Nine Below Zero, Marcus Bonfanti and jazz guitar legend Martin Taylor, among others.

John has organised several sold out concerts in the Isle of Man (an island in the heart of the British Isles), where he lives.

He runs guitar tuition groups in three different towns and villages in addition to a busy schedule of private lessons.

John is also a voluntary guitar tutor for people with experience of mental health problems and is a former voluntary guitar tutor at the Isle of Man Prison.

He is employed by a nursery to sing songs with the children every week and he has also worked with children needing learning support.

John’s work as a guitar tutor and as a musician has featured in Isle of Man Newspapers, Southern Chronicle, Gallery Magazine, MyTime Magazine and Manx Tails.

He has also been interviewed on Manx Radio, the island’s leading broadcaster, several times.
